WE Heraeus Seminar “Superconducting Materials on Their Way from Physics to Applications”

October 19, 2015 (A319).  A WE-Heraeus Seminar titled "Superconducting materials on their way from physics to applications" is scheduled on February 18-20, 2016 in Bad Honnef, Germany, in the beautiful Physikzentrum Bad Honnef (http://www.dpg-physik.de/dpg/pbh/haus/ambiente.html), about 20 km south of Bonn.

We are organizing this seminar under the auspices of the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation (http://www.we-heraeus-stiftung.de/). This private foundation was founded in 1963 to promote research and education in the natural sciences, especially physics, and is considered the most important private funding institution for physics in Germany. One of its principal activities is the organization of seminars. What is the motivation behind this seminar?  In a nutshell: to bridge the gap between the development of superconducting materials and their use in practical power and magnet applications, where there are still several practical questions that need to be answered. This is possible only through joint efforts by physicists, materials scientists and engineers.

This Heraeus seminar proposes to bring together some of the world’s authorities in superconductivity to discuss present status of research in this fascinating field and its future directions. A key feature of this event is that it will involve exchanges between physicists, material scientists, and engineers, so that the discussion will cover the most diversified aspects of and points of view on superconductivity. Among the invited speakers will be people from the industrial world, in order to strengthen the link between the investigation of basic properties of superconducting materials and the realization of practical devices that need to be competitive on the market. Poster sessions where young researchers can present the results of their work in relevant areas are also planned.

The seminar will consist of 45-minute presentations (about 18 in total), each followed by an open discussion. The limited number of participants (about 18 invited speakers + 55 young researchers) will favor interaction and discussion. The final program will be defined at the end of October 2015, but here one can see a tentative list of speakers:

This seminar is a great opportunity for students and young researchers (Masters and PhD students, postdocs) to learn about the state-of-the-art in superconducting materials and applications, and to interact with leading scientists.

The Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation covers the full board accommodation at the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef (water, but not other beverages, is included in meals) for the invited speakers and for the participants from public institutions. Attendees from commercial organizations unfortunately cannot be supported by the non-profit Foundation. A daily fee of 72,- Euro (full board accommodation) will be charged.

The organizers invite young researchers to apply and to contribute to the poster session using the application link on this page: http://www.itep.kit.edu/english/1059.php.

The application deadline is 15.12.2015 and a final confirmation of acceptance will be sent at the beginning of 2016.

We are looking forward to receiving your applications and to seeing you in Bad Honnef.
