December 15, 2016 (A370). Applications for the 2017 IEEE CSC Graduate Study Fellowship in Applied Superconductivity opened on November 1, 2016, and will be accepted until January 15, 2017.

The fellowship is awarded annually to a current full-time graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree in the area of applied superconductivity, at an accredited college or university of recognized standing worldwide. The intention of the award is to encourage students to enter and contribute to the field of applied superconductivity.

December 5, 2016 (A367).  The Research Center Juelich (FZJ), Germany, organizes the 48th IFF[1] Spring School on the topic of “Topological Insulators, Skyrmions, and Majoranas”.  Lectures will start on Monday, March 27th and end on April 7th in the afternoon.   The School intends to attract graduate students, young scientists and other professionals desiring to familiarize themselves with the topic in a relatively systematic manner.

December 5, 2016 (A366).  On November 28, 2016, the U.S. Department of Energy announced nearly $25 million for 13 projects aimed at advancing technologies for energy-efficient electric motors through applied research and development. The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s (EERE) Next Generation Electric Machines projects will address the limitations of traditional materials and designs used in electric motor components by cost-effectively enhancing their efficiency, improving their performance, and reducing weight. This effort will support innovative approaches that will significantly improve the technology in industrial electric motors, which use approximately 70 percent of the electricity consumed by U.S. manufacturers and nearly a quarter of all electricity consumed nationally.

November 03, 2016 (A361). The European Society for Applied Superconductivity (ESAS) seeks nominations for the ESAS AWARD 2017, which will be awarded at the European Conference on Applied Superconductivity (EUCAS) 2017 in Geneva, subject to the nomination of an appropriate candidate, to an individual without age restriction to "recognise excellence in advancing the knowledge of applied superconductivity over the past five years". The award will be announced in the regular ESAS (European Society for Applied Superconductivity) communications and will be presented to the award winner during EUCAS 2017 in Geneva.

October 14, 2016 (A360). The Jan Evetts SUST Award 2017 will be presented at the European Conference on Applied Superconductivity (EUCAS) 2017 in Geneva recognizing The Best Paper published in SUST in 2017 by an Early Career Researcher.

2017 will mark the 30th anniversary of Superconductor Science and Technology (SUST), a journal from IOP Science.  The IOP team and the SUST Editorial Board are dedicated to supporting early career researchers and are delighted to launch The Jan Evetts SUST Award, a new annual early career best SUST paper award named in fond memory of our founding Editor, Professor Jan Evetts.
