SNF Issue 30 Editorial Foreword
October 24, 2014 (E30). This Special Issue No. 30 is devoted to preprints of talks and posters, and also slide presentations given at the Applied Superconductivity Conference (ASC) 2014 held in Charlotte, NC, USA, from August 10 to 15, 2014.
All the plenary slide presentation have been video recorded and eventually will become accessible thanks to the CSC support. However, video presentations require long viewing times. No manuscripts of plenary contributions were submitted to IEEE Trans. Appl. Supercond. (TAS). Consequently, we invited the plenary speakers to publish in SNF their annotated slide presentations. Two such presentations, both on conductors, are included in this Issue. Furthermore, we publish five annotated slide presentations of invited talks and one not annotated, but accepted because of its particular actuality. Finally, we include six preprints of selected invited ASC manuscripts (of 27 submitted to TAS for possible publication after the peer review). The relatively large number of invited preprints and presentations in the Electronics category reflects the fact that in this year’s ASC program more invited papers have been included than in the two other categories (Large Scale Applications and Materials) together.
In addition to the invited preprints and slide presentations, we include extended abstracts and slide presentations of nine winners of the ASC 2014 Best Student Paper Prizes. A preview of these appeared only two weeks after the meeting ended. In the Large Scale Applications category, authors receiving the first and third Prize submitted full text manuscripts. Preprints of these are included instead of extended abstracts. In one case a slide presentation is published in two formats, not only PDF but also PPT. This exception was made, because of particular importance of animations not supported by PDF.
Winners of the SNF Contest for best contributed ASC 2014 preprints will be included in the next SNF Issue No. 31 to appear at the end of January 2015. However, Previews of these will become accessible online already in November 2014, shortly after the present Issue.
Note (added Nov. 3, 2014): The Overview of ASC 2014 written by Elie Track, the ASC 2014 Chair and President of CSC, is published as the Event Highlight HE92.
